NSCP Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy and Safer Sleep for Babies Level 3

The sudden and unexpected death of an infant is one of the most devastating tragedies that could happen to any family, sadly approximately 500 infants die suddenly and unexpectedly each year in England and Wales. This training looks at the risk factors for Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy, the local picture in Nottinghamshire, drawing from data available from the last 12 years of the child Death Review process, and provides a summary of the key learning and messages from the national SUDI review.

This event is being provided virtually over 2.5 hours and is suitable for all professionals working with families and infants

Aims

  • Explain what Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is
  • Highlight the factors which make some babies more vulnerable to SIDS
  • Explain what ‘safer sleep’ is and help you identify risk factors
  • Discuss tips on talking to parents/ carers about ‘safer sleep’ and the barriers to the advice being followed
  • Raise awareness of the learning from the National SUDI Review “Out of routine: A review of sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI) in families where the children are considered at risk of significant harm” and the local response to it

Target audience

For all professionals working with families and infants including but not limited to social workers, family service workers, children’s centre workers, district council workers, fire & rescue workers, Police, nursery workers etc.  It may also serve as a useful update/refresher for some health professionals.
